Vitamins to Stimulate Your Mind

There are many brain health vitamins that can help keep your mind working at its best. However, there are 3 of them that keep your mind active the best. These vitamins being vitamin B, vitamin C, and vitamin E. All 3 of these are included in the 13 essential vitamins that our bodies need daily.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is known to help in many aspects of the body. However, most people do not know that it can actually be beneficial to brain health. According to a recent study, there is a direct correlation between poor brain health and a deficiency in the B12 vitamin.

The National Institutes Of Health, otherwise known as the NIH give the following daily amounts of B12 required in micrograms (mcg):

  • Birth to 6 months: 0.4 mcg
  • 7 to 12 months: 0.5 mcg
  • 1 to 3 years: 0.9 mcg
  • 4 to 8 years: 1.2 mcg
  • 9 to 13 years: 1.8 mcg
  • Teens 14-18 years: 2.4 mcg
  • Adults 18+: 2.4 mcg
  • Pregnant Women: 2.6 mcg
  • Breastfeeding Women: 2.8 mcg

There are many different foods that contain vitamin B12. Although plant foods do not contain any of this vitamin unless they are fortified. Some foods that naturally contain the most vitamin B12 are beef liver and clams. If those foods do not satisfy your taste buds then you can opt into eating fish, meat, poultry, and dairy products.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is another one of the brain health vitamins. That is because it supports brain health by serving as an antioxidant. The main benefits of vitamin C come into play when there is a deficiency.

The National Institutes of Health recommend that you get the following amounts of vitamin C into your diet or through supplementation in milligrams (mg).

  • Birth to 6 months: 40 mg
  • Infants 7 to 12 months: 50 mg
  • 1 to 3 years: 15 mg
  • 4 to 8 years: 25 mg
  • 9 to 13 years: 45 mg
  • Teens 14 to 18: M-75mg, F-65mg
  • Adult Men: 90 mg
  • Adult Women: 75 mg
  • Pregnant Women: 85 mg
  • Breastfeeding Women: 120 mg

There are many foods that contain vitamin C. Citrus fruits contain the highest amounts and are the most common. However other fruits such as strawberries and cantaloupe also contain adequate amounts of vitamin C as well.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E works similarly in the body like Vitamin C. As with vitamin C low levels of this vitamin can contribute to poor brain function. It helps the brain by helping keep it alert. The National Institutes of Health recommend that you get the following amounts of vitamin E into your diet or through supplementation in milligrams (mg).

  • Birth to 6 months: 4 mg
  • Infants 7-12 months: 5 mg
  • 1-3 years: 6 mg
  • 4-8 years: 7 mg
  • 9-13 years: 11 mg
  • 14-18 years: 15 mg
  • Adults: 15 mg
  • Pregnant Women: 15 mg
  • Breastfeeding Women: 15 mg

This vitamin is found naturally in many foods and is sometimes added to fortified foods. Foods like nuts and green vegetables contain good amounts of vitamin E, and some companies add the vitamin to breakfast cereals.

There are many benefits to each of these brain health vitamins. They all can help stimulate your mind in your own way.
